Our Unique World

Earth's Structure

Earth is made up o f different layers. At the centre is a hot metallic core. It is surrounded by the stony mantle, part of which is like sticky toffee. On top is a thin crust that forms the continents and ocean floor.

Earth's Core

It is a mixture of iron and nickel mixed with lighter elements. The pressure at the centre is so high that the inner core remains solid.

Magnetic field

Our Earth acts like a huge magnet, which is why it has north and south poles. Magnetic field is produced by movement in the liquid outer core. The molten metal carries an electrical charge, which generates an electromagnetic field.

Day and Night

Our planet does not stand still. Every 24 hours it revolves once around its axis, so that half the planet is in sunlight and the other half is in darkness. If is does not rotate then one side would have permanent day and the other, permanent night.
